January 25, 2008 10: 00 am Opening Ceremony at Los Angeles City Hall
Council Chambers & City Hall South Lawn (First Street side)

Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, members of the Los Angeles City Council, Our Authors Study Club, Inc. and the Walt Disney Company will officially declare the opening of African American Heritage Month in the City of Los Angeles. The Council presentation will include the unveiling of the African American Heritage Month Calendar and Mayor Villaraigosa will announce the Spirit, Dream and Hope honorees; the Los Angeles Postmaster will receive special recognition. The proclamation ceremony will be followed by a reception on the City Hall South Lawn with Our Authors Study Club, Inc.
February 2, 2008 8:00 am Black History Bus Tour will depart from the
Consolidated Realty Board parking lot
3725 Don Felipe Drive, Los Angeles
This tour follows the progress of African Americans in the City of Los Angeles and includes, Sugar Hill, The Island, Central Avenue, Leimert Park and the Crenshaw area.

Scholars and Extraordinary African American History Makers will be honored.
February 23, 2008 1:00 pm Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. Sigma Sigma
Chapter and Our Authors Study Club, Inc. will present the 55th Annual Oratorical Contest for high school students at
Galilee Baptist Church
3225 W. 48th Street, Los Angeles
This oratorical contest will showcase students in grades 10 through 12 from high schools throughout Los Angeles County. Students will compete for scholarship money by reciting
their own speeches based on the 2008 Theme: “Carter G. Woodson and the Origins of Multiculturalism.”
February 28, 2008 6:00 pm Closing Ceremony in Leimert Park Village
Degnan Boulevard and 43rd Street
Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, 8th District Councilmember Bernard C. Parks, Our Authors Study Club, Inc. and the Walt Disney Company will close out the month long celebration with music, dance and presentations. Winners of the Poster Contest will receive special recognition and their art work will be auctioned.
